GET MOVING!

FAMILY FITNESS

byefelicia 9-15It’s spring time everyone and you know what that means: summer is approaching. This is the perfect time to start toning that summer body. Since spring might be the best season to get out there and get moving, what better way to workout than with the family. It is especially important to get your pre-teens and teenagers involved in activities other than the ones on their cell phones. Teen fitness is critical for physical and mental health and, just like adults, adolescents need 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity everyday to stay healthy. Exercise for teens is particularly important because it can:

  • Reduce anxiety, stress, and depression
  • Improve self-esteem
  • Boost academic performance
  • Help establish lifelong healthy habits
  • Help weight management
  • Build muscle strength and bone mass
  • Controls blood pressure

With school ending next month, we are faced with the problem of what to do during the summer break. It is most important to just do what your family loves to do. There’s no one size fits all solution-the family will simply love being together. Here are some suggestions that will keep everyone moving.

  • Go for a bike ride
  • Play frisbee
  • Hiking
  • Whatever sport your child is engaged in, join in the fun with him or her
  • Swimming
  • Jump rope
  • Roller skating
