WEIGHT LOSS & THE HEALING PROPERTIES OF ART

IMG_0013Do you remember when you were a child and your teacher told you to take out your crayons for a coloring project? Or do you remember your favorite coloring book and how much fun you had coloring those pages? Were you happy? Were you stressed? Were you content? Do you realize you can feel the same way if you picked up a box of crayons or colored pencils and started coloring today.

If you remember back, even though your hands were busy you didn’t have a care in the world …. you were stress free.  As an adult you have acquired many problems and along with them comes stress.  Now how is this a problem?  Well stress can cause your weight gain, and we will get into more of that later.   But while you are coloring your hands are busy, you are not putting food in your mouth. And most remarkably coloring de-stresses you.

Now this is how stress can cause weight gain. In the beginning of your stress cycle you may lose your appetite. But after awhile when this stress is prolonged and become chronic your body goes in survival mode and it thinks you need more calories to make up for the calories that you used combating  the stress. But you didn’t use any calories and you didn’t need them.  Now because your body is in this stressful state the stress hormone, cortisol began to rise which causes your insulin levels to rise you blood sugar drops and then you begin craving sugary, fatty foods.

However, this whole stress cycle can be derailed with a little bit of coloring.  Start out with just ten (10) minutes, and see how much fun it is again.  You will be pleasantly surprised at how the time goes by and how you have slowly alleviated you stress problems.  Research has also proven when you are coloring you are focused.  Coloring also sharpens certain parts of your brain, and coloring decreases your heart rate.

So, I hope now can you begin to see the healing properties of your art.
